morlam music
amazingly under rated in Thailand, this is the music of the working class from the north eastern regions, although it can be heard all over Thailand. Educated and urban Thais turn their noses up at it, but it is by far the most interesting, original and soulful music you will hear in Thailand. Bangkok pop, that cheesy mass produced pap, pales into comparison compared to the gutsiness of Morlam.I got two recent Karoake VCDs when I was in Thailand, Jintara Poonlarb - Roob lhor lai mia and Karaoke VCD : Banyen Raggan - Kor doo jai korn.
Both of these are excellent examples of the morlam genre, with Barnyen being the more purer in style. I wish I had a chance to see some shows last time I was there.
A few other links to check out.
