asbestos, blogs and adverts
Interesting to see that asbestos is topical in the USA as well as in australia. From the article it looks like he deems the topicworthiness of his items via their google Adsense value, which is interesting. In sort of an arse-backwards version of this some of my rants have been triggered/inspired by seeing Google adsense adverts appear on subjects which I strongly disagree with... which is kind of a self perpetuating cycle as my disussion of them brings about their appearance as advertisments.
This all brings us back to trend watching with the trend watcher

book review - BANGKOK 8 - John Burdett
Well I got this book on special at a local newsagent, partially cos it claimed an impeccably researched view of Thailand, and cos it came recommended by James Ellroy on the back.I though the characters and story a bit hackneyed, in fact really spooning on the cliches: the pure and honest religious cop existing in a world of pragmatism and corruption, vowing to avenge his dead partner, who dies in a particularly clever and theatrical death, working with the fish out of water US agent, the calm collected monk working with the brash and pushy westerner, to join forces against the out-of-reach Evil Person Of Influence, etc.. The Bangkok street life and nightlife scenes are well very described, and it goes into detail on a lot of pragmatic rationalizations behind the legendary entrenched corruption. There is ample opportunity for the characters to move around with a backdrop of much vaunted scenes of prostitution, drugs, transvestites, eccentric Russian underworld types. But all just settings for a fairly spindly plot. All together not bad but but can't hold a candle to Ellroy.. perhaps it's cos I have spent time in Thailand but no time in the USA? Who knows.

BARE FACED MESSIAH
One of my favourite books of all time is Russell Miller's Bare Faced Messiah, a great expose of Dianetics and Scientology and just an amazing read. I have a battered paperback copy somewhere but I'm still kicking myself I didn't pick up the hardback I saw in a book shop once.Luckily due to the wonders of the intraweb there is a whole copy of this amazing book on Dienetics and Scientology and L. Ron Hubbard online

666 THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST
I was so impressed by the SATANIC WHITE BOY HIP HOP of Skizzy 666 I felt inspired to create a New Domain with 666 in it. Thanks Something Awful for alerting me to the existence of this musical phenomenon. Also made 665 and 667 just top cover my bases.
More on this subject... why doesn't it suprise me 666.com is is inhabited by an emacs developer.
